Scans: コレクションX [Japanese]
Set Name: コレクションX (Collection X)
Set Logo:
Number of Cards: 64
Checklist: Download (PDF)

Notes: The genesis of XY’s card era starts much like BW’s: during the middle of December at the end of the year, a few months after the release of the games, and as a set block split into two just like the games themselves. The parallels are literally one for one. In a way, it’s actually really neat — the PCL releases of the TCG have always followed a set pattern more or less, so it was expected that XY would get it’s roots settled in before 2014.

Collection X is a rather neat set overall. The small size caters for a good number of Pokemon without it being over-saturating, especially as it’s part of a block that comprises of 127 cards total, and it gets a good leg in the door with having most of the Kalos region’s unique Pokemon seeing their debut in the TCG. The artwork across the board is gorgeous, with traditional and long-serving artists of the TCG illustrating Pokemon of prior generations, while the 5ban Graphics team see that we’ve got renders of all Kalos region Pokemon — unlike Black and White Collection(s) however, the artwork isn’t static with a nondescript void background: there’s life to these things. Different parts of the Kalos terrain and landscapes come to life, and it makes for a fulfilling set overall.

I had two boxes of Collection X, and from them I pulled the entire set excluding Secret Rare cards as they were bumped up the rarity charts. Each box had 3 EX cards guaranteed. Given that only 3 of 4 EX cards saw SR full art cards as well it’s not a nightmare to finish the set off, giving collectors a much needed breather after the insanity of the EX Battle Boost sub set and Megalo Cannon.

Trivia:
• This set was released in Japan on the 13th of December 2013.
• There were no corresponding decks released for this set.
• This set saw a new change in rarities, the first since 2010’s revision of symbols into letters. C, U, R, RR, and SR are the current markers. UR has been dropped.
• This set introduced a new rarity: Double Rare [RR]. It’s the current generation’s closest equivalent to the old white/holo star rare cards of ADV to Legend.
• Likewise this set saw the first change in the official holo since 2010 with the introduction of the Sheen holo.
• In addition to having EX cards, Collection X and Collection Y bring us M-EX cards, a unique mechanic just for Mega Evolution capable Pokemon.
• Collection X is unique in set size due to the inclusion of two unique Vivillon prints: one in the Meadow Pattern, the other in the Elegant Pattern.
• This set was released as XY in English.
