Notes: Ah Rocket Gang. It was more or less inevitable when FireRed and LeafGreen came out that a Rocket themed set would come, as a new-era homage to the classic Rocket Gang set. As such this is such a neat set since it brings back a mechanic that hadn't been in the TCG since Neo 4, Evil Pokemon, which was also first introduced in the original Rocket Gang set. The other really neat thing is that all Evil Pokemon in this set are dual typed. Dark/Grass, Dark/Fire, Dark/Steel and so on -- not only is this an interesting mechanic that would later come back with the delta species Pokemon, but the actual card aesthetic of these dual type cards is really beautiful. Much better than just a slew of pure dark-type cards for the Evil Pokemon.

On top of that you've got Rocket owned Pokemon, Pokemon☆ and a huge amount of ex cards which are all Dark Types AND Rocket owned, and then an ultra rare trainer to boot making for a whopping 13 SR/UR cards all up. This set was hard to finish back when it came out, mainly due to the fact that ☆ cards were one in every 2-4 boxes if that for Japan and that the ☆ cards for this set were incredibly popular, thus a lot of the ones that were pulled were either held on to or played. I was really lucky to get this in one swoop thanks to a seller on Yahoo!Japan.

Lots of great art in this set. Lots of Arita, and a lot of the 3D ex renders don't actually look half bad. I have to say though that Torchic☆ wins hands down for me in this set as favourite card. Followed by Zapdos ex. But Torchic☆ is just gorgeous. It's also interesting to note the bordering on the Rocket-owned ex cards: it makes a comeback in LEGEND-era with the Great Pokemon mechanic!

● This set was released in Japan on the 15th of October 2004.
● There were two decks released alongside this set: Rocket Gang Double Deck -black-, and Rocket Gang Double Deck -silver-. These decks featured the missing Kanto Bird EX cards that are siblings to the Zapdos in the set.
● This was released as EX Team Rocket Returns.
