Special: Divine Grace

Divine Grace is a rather special set of cards in that the set doesn't really exist. It was an idea born between myself and techno4tomcats (under the pseudonym kai_gun) to make a new LEGEND card as a way of making up for an April Fools joke in 2010. To make LEGEND cards that never existed except for in the hearts of fans who wanted them. It started as a once off thing but then we got more ideas, more Pokemon to consider doing, and so we made is a project. These are not intentionally made to deceive people, the Divine Grace project has always been a fan made tribute rather than a hoax. techno4tomcats is the amazing artist behind them, while I simply do the card bases, holo, text, et cetera.

The rules for the LEGEND cards in Divine Grace are simple:
- The Elements represented on the cards should be manifested in some way on the card, or the Pokemon is a literal embodiment of it.
- All Pokemon featured on a LEGEND card must have a tie to something fantastical such as mythology or science. This often works hand in hand with the first rule.

Other than that, it's a free-for all.

These fan-made cards are a gift to the community, a possible what-if. While some later planned ones will be getting into the insane side of things (a tri-element LEGEND, anyone?), they're otherwise an accurate tribute to a short lived era of cards which were fantastic for play and fantastic to collect. Beneath each card we will do over time we'll provide details on the thought process behind the artwork. As we do more cards intermittently we'll add them and their respective wallpapers here.

001-002 Arceus LEGEND
003-004 Latias&Latios LEGEND

Arceus LEGEND - Colourless - HP160
Legendary Pokemon

[C][C][C] Divine Punishment
Return 2 Energy to your hand. This attack deals 100 damage to one of your opponents benched Pokemon. [Don't apply weakness or resistance to the Benched Pokemon.]

[C][C][C][C] Holy Crusade 120

Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: None
Retreat: 2
Combine 2 Arceus LEGEND cards from your hand and play them onto your Bench.

Design Brief: Arceus is a tricky one to put into a LEGEND card. For a start, he was guaranteed to be colourless since we were aiming to do a no-plate version. The next hardest part was working out how best to interpret him. Colourless gives you a lot more reign than the others since it's really a free-for-all and a lot of types are represented. In this case we went for three interpretations: Light, Chaos Theory and String Theory.

techno4tomcats found the beauty of the scientific theories really fit Arceus, rather than going for your typical holy-based representation. We left all the 'holiness' down to the mandala made of light and the card text itself.

Latias&Latios LEGEND – Colourless/Psychic – HP150
Legendary Pokemon
Combine 2 Latias&Latios LEGEND cards in your hand and play them on your Bench.

Poke-Body: Choke
As long as this Pokemon is your Active Pokemon, whenever your opponent plays a Basic Pokemon from his or her hand onto the Bench, place 2 damage counters on that Pokemon.
[P][P] Mist Ball: 60 Damage.
[P][P][C] Lustre Purge: 100 Damage.

If this Pokemon is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
Weakness: Colourless / Psychic (x2)
Resistance: None
Retreat: 3

Design Brief: This one spawned from a lot of Assassin's Creed and a lot of Aladdin while techno4tomcats was staying with me in August. techno4tomcats mentioned an interesting mythology point when we were discussing Hoenn Legends in that the Latis seemed to represent the Djinn (otherwise known as a Genie). The traditional Djinn, unlike the westernised perception of them, are: "similar to humans, jinn have free will allowing them to do as they choose (such as follow any religion). They are usually invisible to humans and humans do not appear clearly to them. Jinn have the power to travel large distances at extreme speeds and are thought to live in remote areas, mountains, seas, trees, and the air, in their own communities."

It fit perfectly and thus this card was born. The background consists of Paisley featuring many depictions of the Latis, Soul Dews, and the Weather Trio of Hoenn whom are also based on Islamic mythology. The soul dew set between them features the arabic word for Paradise within it.

That layer trick you tackled head on really worked well for me to be able to do fun things like those with the piece <3

Oh man, I love how the Lati card came out <3

May be time to update my wallpaper! Do you have any less wonky resolutions, though? ;)
Claire: Mass Effect: Talifaiarrow on August 22nd, 2010 02:44 pm (UTC)
Shoot me a resolution and I can see what I can do ;) However if you're still using your 13" macbook they've got a 1440x900 resolution, and the 1920x1200 scales nicely with fit-to-screen.
Tozhappyjolteon on August 22nd, 2010 02:51 pm (UTC)
*tries out* Oh hey, that looks much more normal than I would have thought! I just saw the resolution numbers and didn't recognize them, so I figured they wouldn't work here~

And this is on my Macbook, but I should probably update my work one too..

I've told you in the past that I can't give you the font, it's a standard font that comes on the mac as part of the unicode Japanese input on the system.

Blanks you can find anywhere, I made my dual-legend blank from a single-legend one and had to render in extra components.

They are so beautiful! Maybe one day these three will get their own official legend cards although these here are certainly good enough to be official themselves. :3

They'll never get their own official cards. That is why this project exists. LEGEND-era ended as of L3 in July. BW-era starts in September and it's bringing new things into the foray rather than clinging to the Legend mechanic.
