It's been a while since my last Getto Daze post, and while this one is small, it's still full of things I'm very ecstatic over! Two new decks, and a total surprise package that was full of sweet treasures galore. Two of the major things I got in this I hope to scan sooner rather than later, too, but until now I've got photos up at least.

Dive in below the cut to take a look!

Happy New Year! I've returned from my sojourn away to a plethora of packages that could make anyone weep with joy since it was like yuletide all over again. Some pretty exciting things in this post, from insanely sized jumbo cards, to surprisingly cute and not so huge jumbo cards, and a heap of promos in between. It's good to be back, baby. With some of the things in this mail batch I've managed to complete a few milestones, and get that bit closer to finishing off some others, which is always a pretty amazing feeling, lets face it.

So without further ado, let's go!

The last getto daze post for the year! I had these turn up today on Christmas Eve, and with the two small envelopes I got I finished off both Collection X and Collection Y, in addition to getting a rather cute promo that came out semi-recently: the second last BW-P promo ever, actually.

Now let me go on record here and say: it's not my birthday, that was back in august, but the haul I got kind of celebrates two types of birthdays overall. The advent of an era, what happens when you get to spend your birthday at Pokemon Centre, and what happens when the franchise as a whole has a birthday. Slowly but surely I'm starting to fill in gaps that I've had with things like these, and it's a really satisfying feeling, and something I'd loathed to do for quite a while due to my general decline of mental health until recently since the actual satisfaction hadn't really been there, which is one of the major things I've loved about TCG collecting as a whole.

So, I've been treating myself! Something I haven't actually done in quite a while, and it's really lovely. Without further ado:

I struck a small goldmine recently, and the enjoyment that I ended up bringing others with the sales of some extras from deep inside my spares boxes gave me my own level of enjoyment: gap filling. I turned to my friend Kohei once more and did quite the raid of his supplies and finally filled some voids I've had for a little while that were bugging me -- a fair few new ones, but one very lovely older one that I've loathed and loathed until this day.

So without further ado:

Getto Daze: Promos Promos Promos!Collapse )

And this isn't the end of the fun; I've got some more gap fillers coming in the mail which hopefully arrive before the new-year. If not, and unless I get some scans finished since I've officially hit holidays for work this might be the last post for CV until the new year :) If it is: Happy New Year and a happy holidays!

It's that time~! Yuletide time is here~!
I personally love it when PCL release sets so close to the holidays because it's like the best present I can get myself as a congratulations for actually surviving until the end of the year. It's even better when it's a dual set block like this because, hey, more cards! More excitement! My boxes landed this morning and I was joined in stream with some awesome buddies of mine from pkmncollectors in opening these beauties, where many jokes were had about Professor HonHonHon and making offerings to the bacon gods for good pulls in Collection Y, and the venison gods for Collection X. Good times were had by all.

So without further ado, some photos and fun facts about the start of the newest era of the TCG -- all under the cut.

Getto Daze: Collection X & Collection YCollapse )

I've got raw scans of both sets all done and will be processing them over the next couple of days, so hopefully I'll have some new scans up for you all shortly! Until then, keep an eye out for more Getto Daze posts in the future; the CollectorViper archive has many things enroute which are pretty awesome, and I'm excited to share them all with you.

A nice little interim to tide us over until Collection X and Y arrive into the nest. I've been after a Master Kit for quite some time but had never really come across one at a good price, or it was always the wrong time when one did turn up.

This week has been, well, the week from hell with a number of factors, so I decided to indulge in some therapy shopping and get in touch with an old friend who's sold me many kits and decks in the past: Kohei Nikumaru -- also known as poly_100, the owner of the store Paper Moon Japan on eBay. They not only had one, but it was at an exceptional price and minty fresh.

So without further ado, a lovely new addition to the CollectorViper collection, something that'll be preserved and treasured for life:

It's a really nice kit overall, and while the card yield is small it's actually still rather fulfilling to get. Surprisingly hard to find without paying a small fortune for it, too. I'm glad to finally have another PCG era deck done and dusted and stored in my collection -- that's a very satisfying feeling right there.

It's that time again! It's been a while since we've had a card drop, and it's a bonus that it's the very beginning of the XY era! Coming in as the last promotional set for 2013, the Beginning Set XY has a nice array of cards to suit just about everyone until Collection X and Collection Y land in December, including the first fairy cards for the Japanese side of things. Check it all out beneath the cut, and note that scans are coming today! They're all in post-processing right now.

Beginning Set XYCollapse )

Both sets are really nice; it's admittedly kind of a shame that you have to fork out for both to get a complete set given the exclusive cards between both, but it's not that bad overall, and it's made up for with really nice CG art from 5ban Graphics (with backgrounds would you believe it) and some gorgeous illustration work to fill in the rest. Seeing Fairy type cards in person is really amazing now too, especially since they're so much more saturated than you'd expect, and much like Dragon type cards have a darker type colour border heading toward the edge of the card which makes them look really dynamic. I bet as holos with the new sheen holo in Collection X or Collection Y? They'll be beyond beautiful.

Welcome to a new era!

I think one of the most satisfying things about card collecting is finally finding that last card you need to finish off not just a set, but an entire era. The Pokemon-e era is, in my opinion, one of the harder Japanese series blocks to finish. Boxes are notoriously hard to find for the later sets of it, as are boosters, and while it might be easy to piece together the majority of a set there always seem to be those last few cards that don't ever pop up.

Some of them are rare. For example, it took me three years to find a Japanese crystal Nidoking, and that was understandable because it was actually a rare card. But sometimes they're not. Sometimes they're the most innocuous and unassuming card.

This was one of those cases.

Energy Removal. Card 053/128 of the first set. This thing has eluded me for a couple of years now since most people don't tend to sell Japanese trainer cards on the english market, and the one I'd found on Yahoo Japan came from a xenophobic seller who refused middleman services so much that they were blacklisted. Luck came at me in the form of Pokemon Pacific, where I scored two cards I'd been after for a little while at a very good price. The trainer card? Hilariously cheap. I just about pinched myself when I saw it because it just seemed uncanny to not only find it but in 1st editon and without inflation.

And so it finally fills a void in my folder that'd bugged me for a few years. And with it, comes the complete closure of an era. E1 was one of the first Japanese classic sets I started to collect, and I pieced the whole thing together by hand without packs or boxes, so finishing it is incredibly satisfying. I've been working on scans for the whole set once I knew this was on the way, and health pending, they should be up tonight or tomorrow now that the last puzzle piece is here.

The other thing I spoiled myself with was a BW-P Raichu card, from the Pokecen tourneys last year. I'd split a set with denkimouse who collects Raichu cards so I've had the Pikachu for quite a while, but hadn't spied a Raichu in a while at a sane price until now.

While it certainly isn't the last card needed for that promo block, it still feels nice having the pair together now. And, hey, one card closer is still more than nothing!

It's kind of amazing to think that the XY Era starts so soon, and that it'll bring a new design and new mechanics to the game all over again. And while it'll be really satisfying collecting it and all the new cards live as it all comes out, it won't quite compare to the satisfaction of finishing a classic.
